Beyond the Baseline

As a tennis player and photographer, I became interested in the difference between athletic performance and the stories told about it. My research examines gender bias in professional tennis coverage through historical and contemporary case studies.

I focus on unequal media attention, gendered language and emotional standards, and the sexualization of female athletes. The accompanying visual exhibition explores how headlines, cameras, and institutions shape their public image.

Hands Pass the Touch

In the Blang villages of Jingmai Mountain, I documented women’s roles in tea-making, textile work, food preparation, and cultural traditions through photography and interviews.

I curated an exhibition about hands as carriers of knowledge: a way to see how culture is practiced, remembered, and passed on in daily life.

Across a Century

Reading Judy Yung’s Unbound Voices led me to ask how Chinese immigrant women’s lives have changed across generations. I interviewed six women in San Francisco’s Chinatown about immigration, family responsibilities, work, and community.

The resulting essay brings historical accounts into conversation with stories from women building their lives today.

Gender Equity in Sports Awareness Campaign

I bring my research into community exhibitions and educational presentations, encouraging viewers to question familiar patterns in sports media.

The campaign connects photography, workshops, and fundraising in support of women in sports, including the Women’s Sports Foundation.

As Co-Director of the social media team for this Asian American athlete advocacy initiative, I lead eight team members in sharing athlete stories, self-care resources, and conversations about discrimination in sports.

Photography as a form of attention

Through photography club workshops, I explore how framing and composition influence the way athletes are represented, and how thoughtful choices can support more equitable coverage.
